If ancient history and monuments are your passion or you just want to experience the ambiance of a vibrant, modern city, Cartagena should be on your list.
Cartagena has over 12 museums, a whole host of monuments not to mention the archaeological sites. The city became great during Roman times, when Hannibal set off from it with his elephants on his journey to Rome, and it has been the base for the Spanish Navy since the start of the 18th century. A cruise ship may even be visiting, as Cartagena’s port is the third deepest in the world.
Visit the Roman amphitheater and the forum, take a boat trip around the harbour or do some shopping and have tapas in one of the many restaurants.
