If you are looking for a true fairytale experience – with all the modern comforts that is- Dromoland Castle might just be just for you. Located in county Clare just outside Newmarket on Fergus, Dromoland Castle has been on my list of places to visit for quite some time. Ever since I first visited Ireland I have been in love with castles and their history – so any chance I get to stay in a castle, there is no stopping me!
So when Mr. SKD suggested to go away for a few days, I knew where we would be going.
The castle is set on 450 acres of picturesque grounds. Once you come through the gate and drive up the windy road towards the castle, you are taken back in time. Not just the beautiful setting by the lake but also the beautiful interior like gorgeous tapestries, paintings, art work and furniture make this place truly unique.
It’s a proper castle hotel where quite a few famous people have stayed: former President Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Nelson Mandela, the Beatles, Mohammad Ali, Colin Farrell, Jack Nicholson, Johnny Cash, Michael Flatley, John Travolta and Bono- just to name a few.
Right next to castle, on the back of the golf club is a beautiful walled garden where you can easily spend all afternoon sitting in the sun, reading a book or simply going for a stroll. There is a fairy trail for the kids which just adds a really nice touch
The Earl of Thormond restaurant is the hotel’s fine dining restaurant and unfortunately didn’t life up to our expectations. The afternoon tea on the other hand was splendid. Named after a kitchen maid that worked in Dromoland Castle for many decades, Mrs. White’s afternoon tea which was served in front of a big roaring fire in the sitting room. A wonderful selection of sandwiches, freshly baked warm scones and delicious miniature cakes was just to die for.
We stayed in a Deluxe room – the was exactly that – a very deluxe room. Overlooking the courtyard, our room was plush and spacious and had a sitting area with separate closet space and a huge bathroom. The beds were luxurious and very comfortable and we had the best nights sleep!
Things to do
If you area keen golfer, you’ll love the 18 hole golf course right beside the castle. Horse riding, falconry, archery, clay shooting and horse & carriage tours are also an option during your stay. Or simply relax, have a spa treatment (or two) and enjoy long walks through the picturesque grounds surrounding the castle followed by a nice glass of champagne!
We had a fantastic time and we will definitely be back! It’s a great place to relax and recharge your batteries.
