I love a nice glass of wine. Well, or two or three. But then who doesn’t?! So when MR. SKD suggested to go for a spin down to Kinsale to try out The Black Pig wine bar, I clearly couldn’t turn him down. The Black Pig has been voted best wine experience in Munster and I have heard a lot about them since they opened in 2013.
It’s located on 66 Lower O’Conell Street, right behind Acton’s Hotel located in a former 18th century coach house. The bar is cozy and I loved the interior and small little backyard. It was buzzing when we went in on a Saturday might and so inviting that you feel at home straight away. I could have easily spend all night there! The wine list – as you would expect for a wine bar – was extensive and all wines at a reasonable price. There are more than 80 wines on the wine list and many of them by the glass as well, The menu was full of local artisan produce and not too extensive, so it was easy to pick something we both enjoy. They have a nice selection of cheeses, olives, Toonsbridge buffalo mozzarella & sun dried tomatoes, Ballyhoura mushrooms but only one main course.
We ordered the antipasto plate, a nice selection of Serrano ham, chorizo, olives (The Real Olive Company), marinated artichoke hearts and crispy sourdough bread from Diva Boutique Bakery (read the interview here) which was simply divine. We shared the ravioli with crab meat and a creamy Parmesan sauce and I could have ordered it all over again – just delicious! The black pig also offers a charcuterie selection, a cheese board, marinated olives and salted almonds and Hederman’s fresh Salmon – just to name a few.
If you are planning to go on a weekend – I would recommend to book in advance as they do get very busy!
