Please tell us what being a business owner means to you and why you became an entrepreneur in the first place?
I was very fortunate to have worked for some great companies in my 20’s and had great experiences. I always wanted to do something for myself and in 2004 timing and circumstances where right and an incredibly encouraging fiancé (now hubby). I love working for myself, I enjoy the challenges and I also love being able to bring my 7 year old daughter and her friends to the workshop to make jewellery. I’d never get away with that if I wasn’t the boss.
What were you doing before you started your business?
I worked for Beamish and Crawford in Cork for 8years. I worked in sales and marketing in Cork City and had the great fortune of working for Kronenbourg in Paris during that time. I had amazing experiences while working at Beamish from event management to sales and marketing, PR. It was a real hands on environment and we were always encouraged to learn all aspects of the company and its business and to think outside the box. This was hugely beneficial when setting up my own business.
What would you say is your greatest professional accomplishment to date?
We were recognised last year as jewellery designer of the year by mrs2be. This award is solely based on brides and customer’s reviews of your business and there experience while dealing with us. We strive to make sure every customers experience is the best it can be, so to be acknowledged for that was fantastic. We also featured in this month’s British Vogue in their jewellery designer section which was hugely exciting.
What’s the best advice you have received in business that you wish to pass on to our readers?
Stick with it, there are tough days but you must dust yourself off and start afresh the next day.
Which advice would you give to women who would like to start their own business?
Determination, stamina and organisation, it’s not always easy juggling motherhood and working, I do try very hard to maintain a healthy balance, you just have to figure out what works for you and your family.
If you could start your business all over again, what would you do differently?
I have made many mistakes in the 11years but I hope I have learned from all of them. I’m still striving to improve as the saying goes “you learn something new every day it’s a bad day if you don’t”.
