The First Lady of Waikiki opened its doors for the first time in March 11th, 1901. Ever since there have been renovations and refurbishments to maintain its splendid design of this beautiful hotel. Once a Sheraton Moana Surfrider, the hotel has been re-branded as Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa.
The hotel has three wings: the Diamond Wing, Banyan Wing and Tower Wing. The Banyan Wing is in the original building and still has an historical feel if you walk through the grand entrance and down the long halls with high ceilings. We stayed for a week last November and loved every minute of our stay. The hotel is fabulous for many reasons but most of all – the location right on Waikiki beach. Just a short walk away fro shops, restaurants, the Honolulu Zoo and did I mention the fabulous beach?
Our room was located in the newer tower wing. The room had 2 Heavenly double beds, flat screen TV’s,and granite bathrooms. The room was nice and big enough for the four of us. From our balcony we could see the ocean as well as a small strip of the busy Kalakaua Avenue. The design was like most Westin hotel rooms, modern and fresh.
We had breakfast at Verandah at the beachhouse every morning during our stay. The selection was fantastic – plenty of fresh fruit, cold meats and cheeses, and a hot section serving eggs, French toast and plenty more. The views from The Verandah are simply stunning. You are overlooking the ocean and the court yard with it’s famous Banyan Tree. The afternoon tea & champagne are supposed to be very nice but unfortunately we didn’t have time to try it out.
We only had dinner once at the resort since there where plenty of restaurants on Kalakaua Ave we wanted to try. While listening to the band that’s playing every afternoon, we were sipping cocktails and ordered some bar food which was tasty but nothing spectacular.
The ocean side of the hotel has a small pool and the few pool lounges were taken quickly. The kids were a bit disappointed by the size of the pool and that it closed at 6.30 pm but since you are right on Waikiki beach, we enjoyed a swim there so it was no big deal at all.
If you want to spend an entire day on the beach, there are umbrellas for rent on the beach for hotel guests at $60 per day.
There is a new state of the art spa at the Moana Surfrider featuring 14 treatment rooms and a 1,400 square foot Westin WORKOUT gym.
