We went to Laniakea Beach on Oahu’s North Shore to see the green sea turtles. Called “honu” in Hawaiian the turles can often be seen on the beach basking in the sun or swimming in the shallow water. When we arrived the beach was already very busy with lots of other tourists waiting for the turtles to come out of the water.
The turtles come very close and don’t seem to mind the crowd around at all. The Hawaiian green sea turtle is protected by state law, so do respect them and don’t touch or harass them in any way. There are always some volunteers making sure you don’t get to close to the honu and they are very helpful with any questions you have about the turtles.
The beach is quite rocky and strong rips can form quite quickly. When we went it was just a beautiful calm day and the kids had a fantastic time swimming in the ocean surrounded by two big green turtles. Just one of those experiences we will never forget.

Tip: Go early in the morning before the crowds arrive and don’t forget your camera.
